This the story of Izzy The Fish, he lived his whole life in a little blue dish...
The Fish Opera, written by Joey Schaaf - copyright 2000
The Three Little Fishies are Dave Ferrin on bass, Joey Schaaf on drums and vocals, Rob Ayers on guitar. The Three Little Fishies performed The Fish Opera live, once at The stork Club in Oakland, CA and then again in Richmond, CA at Joey Schaaf's house on his 40th birthday party. The Three Little Fishies practiced and refined the Fish Opera for over a year and planned on recording it but didn't go through with it. There is a 4 track demo of the fish opera floating around and the written script for it as well.
The story of Izzy the fish goes something like this...
A fish named Izzy lived in a little blue fish bowl at a pet store in an unnamed big city in the southern USA. One night after the shop owner had turned off the lights and closed up the shop Izzy noticed something lurking in the shadows. It turned out to be a feline named Hungry Kat who was on the prowl for a midnight snack and spotted Izzy all alone. Seeing Hungry Kat was on the attack and he was the target, Izzy created a whurlpool of super power inside his fish bowl. When Hungry Kat put her paw into the bowl to grab Izzy she was sucked in, thrown out, and across the room into a tank full of piranha where she was instantly devoured. In the struggle Izzy's bowl was knocked over and smashed releasing Izzy onto the floor. Izzy flipped his way toward a drain hole on the floor and escaped into the sewer system.
The sewer was very unpleasant. Izzy immediately asked one of the sewer dwellers which way was out and went for the exit toward the river. At the entrance to the river he met a character named Mr. Turtle and asked him for further directions. The directions which Mr. Turtle gave were very unclear, but his warning about the alligators that fed in the area was well understood by Izzy.
Izzy continued to travel into gator territory and eventually did run into a gang of ferocious alligators. Izzy was about to be eatten when suddenly the magical being Flicker Of Lite Beer appeared out of a disgarded beer can that was floating next to Izzy. Flicker had been freed from the curse of the can by Izzy makiing a wish while touching the beer can with his fin. Flicker, seeing Izzy's plight offered Izzy three wishes. Izzy asked for two legs to be able to get out of the water and away from the gators and to be far away from the Pet Police, who were now hunting down Izzy for the murder of Hungry Kat. This is when Izzy was tricked by Flicker Of Lite Beer into thinking he had used all his wishes. A wish for each leg and the relocation away from the law was three wishes right? Not quite, but we will get back to that later in the story.
Izzy had received his three wishes so he thought, but the results were not exactly what he had expected. Flicker had turned Izzy into a man and transported him somewhere in the desert badlands of northern Mexico. Izzy wondered around getting very thirsty searching for water singing his song, "The Ballad Of Izzy The Fish" when suddenly he thought he heard voices of people in the distance. Izzy followed the voices and came to the camp of some rather surly Mexican banditos. He asked for water and they gave him tequilla instead. Realizing that Izzy was a gringo and worse that he was faking drinking with them they were insulted and became extremely angry. The banditos began to insult Izzy and get in his face. A rumble ensued and Izzy quietly crawled off in the cover of the flying dirt and dust. The banditos were so drunk and involved in the brawl they hadn't even notice Izzy was gone. Seeing a passing chicken truck, Izzy hitched a ride on it into the nearest town in search of water.
There he was, just as he had wished, with two legs and far from the law, but so far it hadn't been a lot of fun. Izzy saw a sign for a diner named "The Greasy Spoon" and it was just up the road. He jumped off the truck and made a bee line for the diner to get a tall glass of water. He went inside and sat down, ordered a tall one and patiently waited for the waiter to bring it. Just then the Pet Police came in and released the Fish Hounds which they had been tracking Izzy with all this time. The Fish Hounds immediately sniffed Izzy out in the crowd and the Pet Police busted him. Izzy tried to explain that his killing of Hungry Kat was purely in self defence. The Pet Police replied that it was up to the judge and jury to decide not them and that he was going back to the United States to face charges of murder. Just when they were about to slip the hand cuffs on Izzy he remembered something Flicker Of Lite Beer had told him just before he disappeared. Flicker said, "If you ever want to be a fish again just eat some fish." Looking around the restuarant Izzy spotted a customer who was about to chow down on a fish taco. Izzy grabbed the fish taco with lightning speed and shoved it into his mouth. Instantly Izzy changed back into a fish and was flopping around on the table right in front Pet police and stunned onlookers. At that very second before the Pet Police could react, the chef came out from the kitchen to pick a fish for the lunch special. There was Izzy looking like a volunteer if the chef had ever seen one. So Chef snatched him right out of the clutches of the Pet Police and disappeared back into the kitchen. "What do we do now sarg?", asked lieutenant. The sargent replied, " There is only one thing we can do now. Order the lunch special." Meanwhile in the kitchen Izzy had been tossed into a frying pan full of hot oil. It looked like the end for him this time. The pain and urgency of his desparate situation forced Izzy's memory wide open. Izzy had an epiphany! Flicker had tricked him and still owed him a wish. Izzy began screaming for Flicker Of Lite Beer to come and grant him his third and final wish. Prompty Flicker appeared and after some small talk and sizzling Flicker granted Izzy's wish which was to be out of the frying pan and back in his cool blue bowl at the pet store. Instantly Izzy was transported through time and space to exactly where he had wished.
It was dark, the shop was closed and silent. Izzy felt comfortable and safe being back home in his bowl. It was as if he had never even left. Perhaps all this had just been a bad dream from eatting to many fish food pellets before going to sleep. But Izzy did not remember going to sleep.
Suddenly there was the sound of something moving around in the dark. Out of the shadow came a familiar figure. It was Hungry Kat! Flicker had granted Izzy's last wish just as he requested, returning him to his bowl in the pet store. But what Izzy did not suspect until just then was that he had been transported into the past to the exact minute prior to the attack on him by Hungry Kat.
So the story goes round and round like a fish swimming around in it's bowl.
